Mending Kit in a Jar

 Mending Kit in a Jar

With just a little retrofitting, an old-fashioned Mason jar can become a new sewing kit with a built-in pincushion on top.  So when a little emergency arises you have all your sewing needs at hand. Not only is this an inexpensive DIY project, it's super easy and way cuter than store bought kits.

1. A variety of thread

2. Sewing Scissors

3. A pincushion or fiberfill*

4. A variety of needles

5. A canning jar

6. A square of linen or cotton fabric (not pictured)

To begin, unscrew the canning jar and separate the lid from the ring portion. You will not need the lid for this project. Wrap the piece of fabric around the pin cushion and secure underneath with hot glue or pins. Next insert the wrapped pincushion through the bottom of ring portion and pull through so the newly decorated pin- cushion is pulled out of the top of the ring.

Next fill your jar with all your sewing necessities. Screw the ring holding the pincushion on tightly, and Voila! What used to be a boring jar and miscelanious sewing materials is now a cute mending kit, perfect for those loose buttons and torn hems.

*If your pincushion is too "fat" simply cut a small slit underneath and pull out some of the stuffing to "deflate" it a little bit so it will fit properly. If you would rather not use a pincushion you could substitute it for fiberfill which can be found at craft stores. I just happen to already have a dinky old pincushion at home so I used that instead.

Happy Crafting!
